‘Love,’ locals at Sydney fest

Event to run June 10-25

SYDNEY — Paul Pavlikovsky’s Brit pic “My Summer of Love” will open a Sydney Film Festival heavy on local fare.

Australia’s premier fest, running June 10-25, also features the world preem of “Mosaic,” from tyro helmer Aaron Catling, the story of a 14-year-old assaulted by her “uncle.”

Also set for a world debut is “Blacktown” by helmer-scribe Kriv Stenders. Set in Sydney’s western suburbs, pic follows the tense romance between an office worker and an Aboriginal bus driver who saves her from a date rape.

“The Oyster Farmer” will see its Australian preem at the fest. Alex O’Lachlan stars as a newcomer who shakes up the Hawkesbury River oyster community.

Rounding out what is a largely gritty, urban view of Oz in this year’s lineup is Scott Ryan’s “The Magician,” a Tarantino-esque mockumentary about a film crew following a Melbourne hitman.

Fest will see the return of the “meet the filmmakers” sidebar Popcorn Taxi, which will feature talks from director Richard Hawkins. He’ll discuss the Ray Winstone starrer “Everything,” about a man (Winstone) who regularly pays a prostitute (Jan Graveson) to talk.

Fest program includes more than 170 films from 39 countries, with strands covering sports, rock ‘n’ roll, new Asian cinema, docus, visionary filmmakers and the best of British and Argentinian cinema.
