Thesp joins deal roster that includes DiCaprio, Depp

Nicole Kidman and her new unnamed production shingle have signed a three-year first-look production deal with Graham King’s Initial Entertainment Group and Blueprint Films.

King and Initial garnered 11 Oscar nominations for producing and co-financing “The Aviator.”

Under the terms of the exclusive deal with Initial and Blueprint, Initial will finance and co-produce pics with the shingle in which Kidman is expected to produce and/or star. Initial owns a controlling share in the company and will cover all overhead costs as well as provide an undisclosed discretionary fund for development on a project-by-project basis. Initial will retain worldwide rights to the pics.

Through the new deal, Blueprint recently optioned the rights to novel “The Quality of Life Report” written by Meghan Daum. Pic is still in early stages of development and it hasn’t been determined if Kidman will star in the pic, but she will produce with King and Blueprint head Rick Schwartz.

Book, Daum’s debut novel, is the tale of a New York TV producer who while on assignment falls in love with the small Midwest town of Prairie City and relocates from the big city to the country.

Wildwood vet

Per Saari, formerly with Robert Redford’s Wildwood Enterprises, will head development of Kidman’s shingle. Former Miramax senior VP of production Rick Schwartz heads Blueprint, in which Initial’s King is a principal shareholder.

Kidman is the latest A-list star to join Initial’s roster of production deals. Initial also has a first-look overall production deal with Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way and a three-year first-look development deal with Johnny Depp’s Infinitum Nihil.

“One of the reasons this deal works for us is because Nicole is a fabulous creative actress, and she knows the business,” King said. “Alongside Leonardo and Johnny, she is a welcome addition to our family.”

Keeping busy

Actress is currently in Australia filming “Eucalyptus” with Russell Crowe for director Jocelyn Morehouse and Fox Searchlight. She will next star in Sydney Pollack’s “The Interpreter” with Sean Penn and Nora Ephron’s “Bewitched” opposite Will Farrell.

King in addition has developed an ongoing production relationship with helmer Martin Scorsese after collaborating as a financier-producer on DiCaprio starrer “Gangs of New York” and producer of the Scorsese/DiCaprio pic “The Aviator.”

Shingle recently produced the Sundance Film Fest entry Rebecca Miller’s “Ballad of Jack & Rose,” starring Daniel Day-Lewis.

Schwartz most recently exec produced “The Aviator” and “Gangs of New York.” His relationship with Kidman began when he exec produced “Birthday Girl,” “The Others” and “The Human Stain.”
