Jewish fest seeks youth

'Jericho' added as Boston event's first midnight show

BOSTON — The 17th annual Boston Jewish Film Festival, running Nov. 2-13, is targeting Jewish twenty- and thirtysomethings.

Films geared to the older-skewing regular auds are scheduled, but this year there’s also the fest’s first midnight show, “Jericho’s Echo: Punk Rock in the Holy Land.”

A special “Reel Pass” — good for three days — is priced to be affordable by younger filmgoers. Also on tap is “Sarah Silverman: Jesus Is Magic,” featuring the cutting-edge comedian, and a world premiere documentary, “HINEINI: Coming Out in a Jewish High School.”

Fest offers some 50 features and shorts at seven different theaters, including Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts and the Coolidge Corner Theater in Brookline. Annual attendance — including at some suburban theaters running selections from each year’s festival — has averaged in the range of 11,000 to 13,000.

Among the more typical Jewish film fest offerings are the Israel comedy-drama “Ushpizin” and the American comedy “Checking Out”; star Peter Falk is expected to be in attendance to introduce the latter film.
