Script differences, TV skein affects pic
Ever heard of “The Visiting” starring Nicole Kidman?
Didn’t think so.
That’s the latest title for what began as yet another redo of the cult classic “Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” this one directed by German filmmaker Oliver Hirschbiegel and produced by Joel Silver for Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures.
When scribe David Kajganich came up with a script that was quite a bit different from the original story — there are no people-eating pods, for one thing — Warners shortened the title to “Invasion” to avoid confusing auds.
But Warners soon had a problem: Turns out “Invasion” also is the title of ABC’s new drama, one of several frosh dramas that are alien-themed.
So the studio went back to the drawing board and retitled the film, which has begun shooting, “The Visiting.”
But wait, that sounds more like a sequel to Kidman starrer “The Others” than anything to do with “Invasion of the Body Snatchers.” Warners might be wishing it had shortened the title to “Body Snatchers”; that way, the pic would still havesome connection to its lineage.
Studio insiders say “The Visiting” could prove to be just a “holder” title — a visitor of sorts.
