India picks ‘Paheli’ for Oscar race

Closing date for foreign-lingo submissions is Oct. 3

HOLLYWOOD — Amol Palekar’s “Paheli” (Puzzle) has been selected as India’s entry in the foreign-language Oscar race.

Pic, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukerji, centers around a ghost who falls in love with a neglected bride. It is based on an old Rajasthani folk tale by Vijayadan Detha.

Vinod Pandey, acting chairman of the Film Federation of India, said the pic “represents the Indian ethos.”

Director Ashutosh Gowarikar’s “Lagaan” reached the final five films in 2002.

The closing date for foreign-language Oscar submissions is Oct. 3. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences will announce the nominations Jan. 31; the 78th Oscar ceremony will take place March 5.
