Imax adds another Russian venue

MPX system allows ehibs to retrofit 35mm theaters

Imax has inked a deal with ZAO Kompaniya Perspektiva of Russia to install an Imax MPX theater system in the flagship multiplex in the central Russian city of Ufa.

“The Imax MPX system has tremendously expanded the growth potential of the Imax theater network,” said Imax co-chairmen and co-CEOs Richard Gelfond and Bradley Wechsler. “We believe new theater openings will drive additional awareness of Imax in Russia and further accelerate our momentum in this rapidly developing market.”

Imax’s MPX system is a lower-cost means for exhibitors to get into the Imax game by retrofitting existing 35mm theaters.

Ufa is the fourth Russian city in which an Imax theater is skedded to open in the coming year. Company has previously signed deals to open in multiplexes in the cities of Kazan, Perm and St. Petersburg.

Russia will have seven Imax screens by 2008.
