Hrebejk hailed with Czech Lion

'Up and Down' takes honors for scibe, actings

PRAGUE — Czech helmer Jan Hrebejk nabbed his third Czech Lion film award on Saturday, this time for “Up and Down,” which also took honors for film, screenplay (Petr Jarchovsky) and actress (Emilia Vasaryova).

The comedy was this year’s Czech Oscar entry but failed to make the cut to the final five.

“King of Thieves,” a carnivalesque tale of human trafficking helmed and written by Ivan Fila, drew nods for sound, music (former dissident rocker Michal Kocab), cinematography and actor (Roma child circus performer Yasha Kultiasov).

The surrealist hockey fantasy “Champions” scored supporting actress (Klara Meliskova), supporting actor (Jan Budar) and editing honors.

Offbeat horror “Fatherland” won art direction while “Snowboarders” took the special prize for biggest aud of 2004, no doubt precipitating a new wave of Czech teen films.

The Magnesia Prize for foreign film went to Canada’s “The Barbarian Invasions,” as announced at the noms on Feb. 9. The Lions gala, hosted by Roger Moore, traditionally scores one of Czech TV’s biggest auds of the season.
