Gold Circle lines up Asia deal

Agreement covers remakes, co-prod'ns, original projects

PUSAN, South Korea — Gold Circle Films has struck a first-look deal with Los Angeles-based .40 Caliber Films, which has strong links to the Asian film-making scene.

Deal was signed by Gold Circle’s Paul Brooks and veep Zak Kadison who brokered the deal.

Deal sees .40 Caliber propose material that Gold Circle can either option or buy outright.

Gold Circle may fully finance pictures with budgets in the $10 million-$20 million range. Costlier efforts are likely to be made with a studio partner.

Gold Circle has a first-look deal at Universal and a second-look deal at Paramount. It is in post with “Slither” and “Whisper,” both set for release through Universal in 2006. Gold Circle also has a relationship with international sales outfit Mandrake.

.40 Caliber is putting together remake packages based on Im Phil-sung’s “Antarctic Journal” and Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s “The Loft” and other properties from Korean sales agent Cineclick Asia.

Yoo was a selector for the Bucheon Fantasy Film Festival before heading international distribution for South Korea’s Mirovision. There she handled hits “Phone” and “My Sassy Girl.”

Thompson, a former production exec at Maverick Films, is producing an English-language remake of “Phone” for Rogue Pictures. With Maverick and Mirovision, Yoo and Thompson produced suspenser “Sam’s Lake” is now in post-production.
