Entertainment buys ‘Hotel Rwanda’

U.K. coprod has three Oscar noms

LONDON — Entertainment Film Distributors has picked up U.K. rights to Terry George’s triple Oscar-nominated pic “Hotel Rwanda.”

The deal was struck with Lions Gate, which is handling international sales.

It came just days after the pic’s leads Don Cheadle and Brit actress Sophie Okonedo won Academy Award nominations, with George and Keir Pearson also sharing a nod for original screenplay.

A co-production between the U.K., Canada, Italy and South Africa, “Hotel Rwanda” had financing from Brit equity fund Inside Track, even though it was made, unsually, without a U.K. distribution deal in place.

It’s based on the true story of a hotel manager who sheltered thousands of Tutsi refugees from the Rwandan genocide.
