Dep’t store sells shot at the movies

Movie deal hidden in lucky gift bag

A Tokyo department store is offering one lucky shopper a chance to star in a made-to-order short shot by the Shochiku studio on a ¥100 million ($854,700) budget — higher than for many local theatrical films.

Movie deal will be in one of the thousands of lucky gift bags (fukubukuro) the Mitsukoshi Nihonbashi department store will sell to shoppers on Jan. 1 and 2.

Winner will work with Shochiku over seven months scripting, shooting and editing a 60-minute, 35mm film. He or she can lense his or her life story or star in a drama.

Shochiku will select what it describes as a “name” cast and a director with theatrical credits. Pic will premiere at a Shochiku theater.

Mitsukoshi has not yet revealed the price for the lucky bag — only that it will be considerably less than $850,000. Store also plans to make similar “movies about me” part of its product line.
