‘Cazuza’ doesn’t stop winning kudos

Biopic earns feature, director, script awards

RIO DE JANEIRO — Walter Carvalho’s and Sandra Werneck’s “Cazuza — O tempo nao para” (Cazuza — Time Doesn’t Stop) nabbed seven awards at this year’s Brazilian Film Academy kudos.

Biopic about pop star Cazuza, who died in 1990 of AIDS-related illnesses, won feature, actor (Daniel Oliveira), cinematography (Carvalho) and adapted script (Fernando Bonassi and Victor Navas).

Oscar nominee Fernanda Montenegro received the actress award for her perf in Marcos Bernstein’s “O outro lado da rua” (The Other Side of the Street), which also drew the supporting actress award for Laura Cardoso.

Claudio Torres won director for “Redentor” (Redeemer).

Eliane Caffe’s “Narradores de jave” (The Storytellers) received the supporting actor (Gero Camilo) and original script (Luiz Alberto de Abreu and Eliane Caffe) awards.

Paulo Sacramento’s “O prisioneiro da grade de ferro” (“The Prisoner of the Iron Cell”) took the doc prize.

Lars von Trier’s “Dogville” won the foreign feature category.

The academy’s more than 200 members chose the winners via an Internet vote audited by PricewaterhouseCoopers.
