Cairo skeds China focus

Event also hopes to feature selections from Iraq

CAIRO – China will be the on the menu of Cairo Film Fest’s 29th edition (Nov. 29-Dec. 9). More than 30 Chinese films will be screened. with fest opening with Yimou Zhang’s “House of Flying Daggers” and the jury headed by Chinese director Ping He (“Warriors of Heaven and Earth”).

“We hope more Western participants will put the film festival on the calendar this year, combining West and East with the Mideast,” says fest prexy Cherif Shoubashy.

Fest will feature Arab cinema, including a section Great Arabs Abroad, with Paula Abdul invited to the fest; and a Lebanese Panorama with Lebanese actress Kamen Labass on the jury. Event also hopes to feature selections from Iraq.

Journalists at fest’s kickoff press conference soundly drubbed a doc made about former Cairo fest presidents for omitting Fest founder Kamal El-Malakh, head of the first nine editions. The past two fests focused on French and Italian cinema.
