GOOD MORNING: While the dollar-donating Demos were driving up to fund-raisers for Hillary Rodham Clinton Wednesday evening in L.A., the most recently outspoken Democrat in these parts, Warren Beatty, was driving to Chavez Ravine with wife Annette Bening and their four children to see a Dodger game vs. the Cubs. He’d promised the children the game, and family man Beatty put politics aside for one night. But he’s still very much in the political arena. I spoke with Warren (by phone) and he said he’s “sorting out” the number of places and circumstances for his next speech site… He admitted he’s received offers from “all over the place.” And he’s already writing his next attack. He hopes Arnold “backs off” his pitch (and expenditure) for a special election–one of whose major issues would be the castrating of union political contributions — with Beatty claiming unionized America has dropped from 33.3% to 12%. As a result of Warren’s commencement speech before the UC Berkeley Goldman School of Public Policy, he said he’s heard from “a lot of old friends — and new ones.” The press pickup of his speech continues — a lengthy excerpt in Daily Variety‘s guest column Wednesday was unsolicited by him.THE HOTEL CARLYLE‘s general manager James McBride set Steve Tyrell to take over the Bobby Short holiday stand at the Club Carlyle, Nov. 1-Dec. 31. “I am honored to do it,” Tyrell told me. He has also inked for options on further dates once occupied by Bobby. Tyrell says he’s doubly happy to be there — he can see Woody Allen who plays the club Mondays. Tyrell produced Woody’s standup comedy album and they are longtime friends. Tyrell’s now winding an album of Disney tunes — including, of course, “When You Wish Upon a Star.” He started his singing career with Disney, singing “The Way You Look Tonight” in the Steve Martin-Diane Keaton “Father of the Bride” pix. Tyrell can also be seen (heard) Sunday at UCLA’s Friends of Jazz tribute to David Abell and at the Catalina Bar & Grill June 13-19… Meanwhile, it’s a busy weekend in N.Y. for Bill Haber. On Sunday his smash hit musical “Monty Python’s Spamalot” is up for 14 Tony Awards and Monday his Save the Children org holds its Kids Night Out Intl. Gala on Pier 60 with hosts Tim Conway, Cokie Roberts and Richard Thomas. And “Spamalot” cast members including David Hyde Pierce will be on hand. This year’s honoree, Kraft Foods CEO Roger Deromedi. Kraft helps children in coffee-growing communities in Central America start on the path to success… Also Sunday, Pierre Cossette is inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame in Toronto. For B’way, Pierre’s readying a musical based on the life of Woody Guthrie and a one-woman show for Linda Eder. He’s also starting a record label with Canadian singer Caro Welsman as his first artist. And Pierre’s next TV special is for Celine Dion. Think Katharine Hepburn” — was producer Martin Manulis’ advice to Nancy Olson as she was about to go into a scene in CBS’ “The Royal Family” with Fredric March, Helen Hayes and Claudette Colbert. Nancy (Mrs. Alan Livingston) recalled the advice at a love-filled 90th birthday party at Chez Mimi for Manulis, the legendary stage and television producer. Others toasting him included Gore Vida,l who wrote for Manulis at CBS and at 20th TV, and Pat Barry, whose late husband Philip also wrote for him. Sam Goldwyn Jr. read a letter from Dominick Dunne, who stayed at the Manulis home during the trial of the murderer of Dominick’s daughter Dominique. Others speaking included Felisa Vanoff and loving family members… And in honor of Dan Tana’s 70th birthday, daughters Katerina and Gabrielle have established the Dan Tana Endowment Men’s Soccer Scholarship at UCLA to which they’ve made a $150,000 commitment to fully endow the fund. It will be celebrated June 11, 2-5 p.m. at the J.D. Morgan Athletic Center on the UCLA campus. Dan, who was a professional soccer player and team owner, is on the exec committee of the Intl. Federation of the Football Assn. Daughter Gabrielle is a filmmaker readying a docu feature on the Motion Picture & TV Country House & Hospital with producer Michael Kuhn funding. No stranger to the MPTF, the Tana daughters’ maternal grandfather, producer Sam Wiesenthal, was a MPTVF resident.
