BAFTA tweaks pic kudos rules

Pics must be entered for prize

LONDON — The British Academy of Film & TV Arts has tweaked the entry rules for its film awards, in a bid to reduce the number of movies up for consideration.

From now onwards, films must be actively entered by distribs, producers or BAFTA members, rather than qualifying automatically simply by getting released in the relevant year.

That should mean members won’t have to wade through an unwieldy list with hundreds of superfluous high school movies and Bollywood musicals when voting in the first round.

“By introducing this new system, we hope to reduce the number of films listed by excluding the ones that do not have the support of distributors, producers or members,” said BAFTA chief exec Amanda Berry in a letter to members.

The aim, she wrote, is to give the membership “a chance to see a larger percentage of the key films in contention.”
