Former journalist An Cheong-sook has been named chair of top film funder the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), the body responsible for policy, promotion, training and subsidy administration.An has a three-year mandate and replaces Lee Choon-jik, whose term came to an end May 27. She heads a board of eight other new commissioners and will administer a $52 million budget. An described her mission as a balancing act involving stabilizing the fundamentals of the Korean movie industry while also promoting creative diversity. In 1999 An was briefly involved with KOFIC’s forerunner, the Korean Motion Picture Promotion Corp., but she is best known for a 17-year stint as a journalist with the Hankyoreh newspaper and as editor-in-chief of influential film mag Cine 21. She is also a board director of Women in Film Korea.
