Writer-director sets 'Resurrected' drama

Writer-director Paul Schrader is set to helm Holocaust drama “Adam Resurrected” for newly formed production and international sales company Bleiberg Entertainment.

Gig marks Schrader’s first stint behind the camera since the ill-fated “Exorcist” prequel project.

“Adam Resurrected,” based on Yoram Kaniuk’s novel, is about a Jewish circus entertainer who is kept alive by the Nazis to entertain Jews as they march to their deaths. He ends up in an asylum for Holocaust survivors, fighting to survive the madness around him.

Noah Stollman penned the screenplay.

Bleiberg and German distrib EMS/3L (“Monster,” “Machinist”) are financing partners on “Resurrected.” Bleiberg is handling worldwide sales.

Ehud Bleiberg and EMS/3L topper Werner Wirsing are producing. Ulf Israel (“Gate to Heaven”) is exec producing.

Schrader, whose numerous writing credits include “Taxi Driver,” “Raging Bull” and “The Last Temptation of Christ,” has directed films including “Auto Focus,” “Affliction” and “American Gigolo.”

Schrader ran into trouble with the “Exorcist” prequel when producers said his take was too intellectual and not gory enough. His version was shelved, and Renny Harlin (“Die Hard 2″) hired to take over.

But after Morgan Creek released Harlin’s “Exorcist: The Beginning” to tepid box office numbers and poor reviews, Schrader convinced producers to let him finish his cut, which he did.

Next month, “Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist” will be released as a Paul Schrader film on DVD by Warner Home Video.

Bleiberg Entertainment said “Adam Resurrected” will be shot in German, Romania and Israel. Production is set to begin next summer.
