LONDON — Universal Pictures Intl. has launched a video distribution arm in Russia.
Universal Pictures Russia, which opened for business Jan. 14, will release “The Bourne Supremacy” in March as its first title. Previously, UPI distributed its product in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (the former Soviet Union) via licensee agreements.
The new arm is headed by managing director Egor Borisov, who reports to Wayne Borg, the London-based VP of Latin America/Asia Pacific.
The Russian operation also will enable UPI to take a proactive role in combating the region’s chronically high level of piracy. It will campaign to raise consumer awareness of the issue and lobby the government for action.
