‘Tsotsi’ flies to Teutonic distrib

Pic took major awards in Edinburgh and Toronto

Distrib Kinowelt has picked up German rights to South African Oscar candidate “Tsotsi,” which will premiere here at the upcoming Hof Film Festival, running Oct. 26-30.

Gavin Hood’s gangster drama, which Miramax is releasing Stateside, has gone down well on the fest circuit, taking major awards in Edinburgh and Toronto.

Kinowelt, which acquired theatrical, DVD and TV rights, will release the pic early next year.

Kinowelt is enjoying a major hit with “March of the Penguins,” which garnered $1.1 million at the box office this past weekend, breaking the record set by Michael Moore’s “Fahrenheit 9/11” for the documentary with the best start in Germany.
