Weaving to replace Purefoy on Wachowski pic

Hugo Weaving has joined the Wachowski Brothers’ and Joel Silver’s production of action-thriller “V for Vendetta,” starring opposite Natalie Portman.

He’ll play the title vigilante character known as V.

Weaving replaces James Purefoy, who left the production for undisclosed reasons. Pic’s in production in Berlin with a Nov. 4 release by Warner Bros.

The cast includes Stephen Rea and Stephen Fry. “V for Vendetta” is directed by James McTeigue with a screenplay by Andy Wachowski and Larry Wachowski, based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore and illustrator David Lloyd.

Weaving is best known as Agent Smith in the Wachowskis’ “The Matrix” trilogy and as Elrond in “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy.

Pic’s a U.K.-Germany co-production between Warner Bros. Prods. and Funfte Babelsberg Film.
