David Cronenberg’s next pic is “Painkillers,” a project that reps Cronenberg’s first original screenplay in eight years.
The futuristic “Painkillers” follows a detective who is sent undercover to save humanity in a world where surgery is sex and pain is pleasure. Andras Hamori will produce with ThinkFilm chairman Robert Lantos.
Budgeted at $35 million, the largest of any Cronenberg pic, sales are handled through ThinkFilm’s new international sales division.
“Sometimes it’s good to be afraid of what you create,” said Cronenberg. “And I am afraid of ‘Painkillers.'”
“David and I have wanted to get this project off the ground for a few years,” said Lantos, who also produced the Cronenberg pics “Crash” and “eXistenZ.” “But we were not sure the world was ready for its radical subject matter.”
Cronenberg’s latest film, “A History of Violence,” bows in the official competition Sunday.
