Malaga unspools docu competish

Pics include 'Caravana,' 'Cesar y Zain'

MADRID — Two pics from Pedro and Agustin Almodovar’s El Deseo, Gerardo Olivares’ “Caravana” and Larry Levene’s “Cesar y Zain,” will compete in the official documentary section of the eighth Malaga Spanish Film Festival.

The docu section also showcases Elias Querejeta-produced “Invierno en Bagdad,” Tornasol/Continental production “Ni locas, ni terroristas,” and Mercedes Alvarez’s Rotterdam Tiger Award winner “El cielo gira” (The Sky Turns), which also picked up the Paris Festival’s top prize in March.

Some 180 docs were presented for selection at Malaga, a sign of the genre’s vitality in Spain.

Running April 22-30, Malaga is Spain’s only major film event focusing on its national cinema.

Malaga has already announced six titles competing in its main feature competish.

They are Mariano Barroso’s film noir “Hormigas en la boca” (Ants in the Mouth); Gerardo Herrero’s drug-trade drama “Heroina” (Heroin); Chus Gutierrez’s glam punk pic “El Calentito”; ’80s generational drama “Pasos,” the directorial debut of Argentine thesp Federico Luppi; Jose Corbacho and Juan Cruz’s “Tapas”; and Laura Mana’s rural comedy “Morir en San Hilario” (To Die in San Hilario).
