JAKARTA — Indonesian production is on an upswing, with 31 titles produced last year in contrast to a paltry four each in 1998 and ’99.
According to a spokesman for the 21 Group of multiplexes, local titles now generate 24% of the box office, with American titles producing much of the balance.
This year, the total could go even higher. While 21 of the 31 local titles got theatrical distribution, only seven totaled more than 100,000 admissions. At the top are teen romantic dramas “30 Hari Mencari Cinta” (30 Days in Search of Love), with more than 900,000 tickets, and “Virgin,” with 832,000.
Critically acclaimed biopic “Gie,” helmed by Riri Riza and produced by Mira Lesmana, opened July 14 and is expected to attract more than a million moviegoers.
No local pictures were able to break into last year’s top 10, which was topped by “Spider-Man 2” and “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.”
