John Stockwell is set to direct as his next film “Turistas,” a thriller to be financed by 2929 Entertainment for a late May shoot in Brazil.
“Las Vegas” star Josh Duhamel is in talks to play the male lead.
Scripted by tyro Michael Ross, “Turistas” follows six college students who, while backpacking across Brazil, get stranded in the jungles and imprisoned by a military group with a bloody agenda.
Scott Steindorff, who exec produces NBC’s “Las Vegas,” put his own chips on the table to buy the script from Ross, who’ll get his first writing credit after racking up credits as an editor.Steindorff partnered with Bo Zenga, who got the script to Stockwell. Steindorff and Zenga will produce and Stone Village’s Scott LaStaiti will co-produce.
Stockwell’s commitment prompted 2929 Entertainment partners Todd Wagner and Mark Cuban to agree to finance the pic, whose budget sources placed at $10 million-$12 million. Wagner and Cuban will be exec producers, and 2929 Prods. head Marc Butan will also take a producing credit.
Next pic from “Blue Crush” helmer Walker is “Into the Blue,” which opens this summer.
