NEW YORK — Indie distributor Zeitgeist Films has acquired all U.S. rights to helmer Marc Rothemund’s “Sophie Scholl: The Final Days” (Sophie Scholl: Die Letzten Tage) starring Julia Jentsch (“The Edukators”) in the title role.
Pic follows the true story of Scholl, the Munich student who was beheaded for distributing counterpropaganda leaflets in 1943 as part of the White Rose resistance movement.
Zeitgeist will roll out pic in February. It recently won a trio of German Lola awards, and also won director and actress honors at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year.
Fred Breinersdorfer penned the screenplay. Rothemund produced with Chistoph Mueller, Sven Burgemeister and Fred Breinersdorfer.
Bavaria Film Intl. sold off rights on the project. Zeitgeist is headed by co-prexys Nancy Gerstman and Emily Russo.
Gotham-based shingle’s credits include upcoming pics “The World,” by helmer Jia Zhangke, and Dayna Goldfine and Dan Geller’s “Ballets Russes,” as well as the 2003 foreign-language Oscar winner “Nowhere in Africa.”
