Cinepolis, Imax hitched

Third set to bow in Guadalajara

MIAMI — Mexican exhib Cinepolis has expanded its deal with Imax to add three more large-screen-format venues to the circuit.

Cinepolis committed to three theaters in 2004.

The first opened in Mexico City in November. It is the highest-grossing multiplex in the country.

The second was installed in Monterrey in March.

The third will bow in Guadalajara, Mexico’s second-largest city, in June to coincide with the release of Warner’s “Batman Begins: The Imax Experience.” An existing stadium-seating auditorium will be retrofitted.

An Imax screen will open in Puebla in 2006 and a second Mexico City location in 2007. The sixth is planned for 2008; its location has not yet been announced. Imax has eight other theaters in institutions in Mexico.

Cinepolis is the largest exhib in Latin America with more than 1,200 screens, most of them in Mexico, but it is expanding its presence in Central America.
