Los Angeles-based Avatar has ponied up a low-six-figure sum to acquire sci-fi action-thriller spec “Lifers” by tyro writing team Luke Borghi and Bart Rachmil.
“Lifers,” seen as a sci-fi twist on “The Fugitive,” centers on a boy and a girl who must solve a mystery involving a futuristic law system under which children born with a certain genetic code are automatically imprisoned.
Jake Wagner brought the project into Avatar; he’ll oversee development and be involved in a producing capacity.
“Lifers” is the first spec for Rachmil and Borghi, who have been assistant editors on several studio pictures.
Avatar is a private equity company set up to finance features under $10 million.
