Austin lauds ‘Hooligans’

Special jury award goes to 'Cavite'

Lexi Alexander’s “Hooligans” was the champion at the 12th annual South by Southwest Film Conference and Festival, which announced competition winners Tuesday night in Austin, Texas.

Tale of a young American who becomes embroiled in U.K. soccer fanaticism after he’s expelled from Harvard, “Hooligans” took the jury award for narrative feature, as well as the audience award. Film stars Elijah Wood, Charlie Hunnam and Claire Forlani; Gigi Pritzker, Deborah Del Prete and Donald Zukerman produced.

A special jury award went to “Cavite,” an ultralow-budget dramatic thriller directed by Ian Gamazon and Neill Dela Llana.

Audiences and juries thought alike on the docs: Top prizes in both sections went to Michele Ohayon’s “Cowboy Del Amor,” with Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady’s “The Boys of Baraka” coming in second in both categories.

Other aud awards went to docs “The Education of Shelby Knox,” directed by Marion Lipschutz and Rose Rosenblatt, and Ellen Spiro’s “Troop 1500.”

The Duplass brothers’ “The Puffy Chair” drew first place in Emerging Visions, with Arin Crumley and Susan Buice’s “Four Eyed Monsters” coming in second.

Ben Rekhi’s “Waterborne” was recognized as the runner-up in narrative feature.
