Acad hands out grants

UCLA, Columbia, NYU among recipients

It’s no gold statue, but when 47 universities, colleges and cultural organizations receive the “envelope please” from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, they will get something a little more useful: a check.

The Academy Foundation has awarded $500,000 in institutional and educational grants, ranging from $25,000 to $5,000, to schools such as UCLA, Columbia, NYU and institutions such as the American Film Institute and Inner City Filmmakers in Los Angeles. EQuinoxe to be Continued in France and Winnipeg Film Group in Canada have also been selected.

“The grants program is designed to bridge public audiences with the film industry while promoting and advancing film as an artform and profession,” said grants committee chair Buffy Shutt.

The Academy Foundation has awarded more than 400 grants to film-related, nonprofit orgs and schools since its inception in 1968.
