46 projects get coin

World Brief

The Rotterdam Film Festival’s Hubert Bals Fund has awarded E630,000 ($811,000) to 46 film projects, one of the largest handouts in its history.

The fund provides coin for script and project development, distribution and post-production, and has helped in the completion of more than 530 pics from non-Western territories in its 17-year history.

Carlos Reygada’s “Battle in Heaven,” in the Official Competition at Cannes, and Amat Escalante’s “Sangre” (Un Certain Regard) were among those winning a post-production grant. Ghanian lenser Gahite Fofana’s “Early in the Morning” also got a grant for post.

The fund also handed down a script and project development grant for an animated pic to Argentina’s Ayar Blasco for “El Sol.”

The fund is supported by the Dutch government, pubcaster NPS and several nongovernmental orgs.
