Italy: Rival studios offer state of the art services

Eligible local pics can tap into government funding for up to 50% of their budgets. Eligibility is determined by a so-called reference system that looks at director and producer track records, with special provisions made for first works. These funds are not available to non-Italian films.

Cinecitta Studios, Rome

Boasts the largest soundstage in Europe. Has on-site post facilities and recently acquired two satellite outposts, Rome’s Dino Studios and Cinecitta Umbria in Papigno, north of the Italian capital. Employs probably the world’s most skillful set-construction craftsmen.

Lumiq Studios, Turin

A state-of-the-art HD and 3-D animation studio, with “blue box” sets and a pool for underwater shooting. On-site post. Lumiq also invests in projects. Recently pacted with Spain’s Filmax to co-produce toon “Donkey Xote,” soon to shoot in Turin.

Located on the Cinecitta lot, but also with a Milan facility, Proxima is Italy’s leading post-production provider.
