Australia: Big pix lured by incentives, facilities

PRODUCTION INCENTIVES:

Federal 12.5% refundable tax offset pays a rebate on production costs on all goods and services including cast and crew wages in Australia. Productions must have a budget of over A$15 million ($11 million). For productions with budgets between $11 million-$38 million, 70% of the expenditure must be in Australia. For productions spending over $38 million in Australia, there is no percentage test.

Recent productions include “Superman Returns” and “Charlotte’s Web.” See www.dcita.gov.au/filmtaxoffset

Co-production opportunities: The federal 12.5% rebate can be combined with various state incentives and used with Australia’s co-production program (Canada, the U.K., Ireland, France, Germany, Israel, New Zealand, Italy, and, under construction, China). Recent productions include “Pobby and Dingan” and “Like Minds.” Ausfilm publishes a directory of potential co-production producers from Australia — available at www.ausfilm.com.au/childsplay/cgi-bin/show_page.pl/2/123.

Film Finance Corp. funds are open only to Australian productions only.

State incentives: Each of Australia’s seven states and territories offers incentives described in detail on Ausfilm’s Web site: www.ausfilm.com.au
