Weinsteins kicks ‘Kung Fu’ into action

Brothers head to 'School' for new pic

The Weinstein Co. has acquired screen rights to “Kung Fu High School,” a Ryan Gattis novel that has been scripted by Ernesto Foronda.

Pic will be done as a co-production between the Weinstein Co. and Dimension Films, with Neal Edelstein and Mike Macari producing through their Macari/Edelstein Films banner.

Novel revolves around a high school where the students matriculate in bloody martial-arts mayhem. Nicknamed Kung Fu High, the school is a prisonlike venue ruled by five gangs, each of which employs a stylized ancient Asian martial-arts discipline.

The book, which was sold for high six figures against seven figures, was grabbed early by Edelstein and Macari, who brought Foronda on to write a script that was completed by the time the property went to studios. Several bidders emerged as soon as the book was shopped by IPG, but Harvey and Bob Weinstein were quickest to the punch.

Foronda is writing a remake of “Oldboy” at Universal for Justin Lin, who directed the Foronda-scripted “Better Luck Tomorrow.” Edelstein and Macari, who produced “The Ring” films, are currently producing the David Goyer-directed “The Invisible” with Gary Barber, Roger Birnbaum and Jon Glickman for Spyglass and Disney. They will follow with two pics for New Line: the Bernard Rose-directed “Amusement” and the Gary Auerbach-directed Vince Vaughn starrer “No Place Like Home.”
