Weinsteins book Basner

Former Focus exec will take on new role immediately

Focus Features exec VP of international sales and distribution Glen Basner has ankled the Universal specialty unit to join Bob and Harvey Weinstein’s new company — temporarily dubbed the Weinstein Co. — as prexy of its international arm.

Based in Gotham, Basner takes on the new role immediately, working for both Miramax Films and the Weinsteins’ new venture. He will segue to full-time work for the Weinsteins Oct. 1, when the brothers’ contract with Miramax parent Disney runs its course.

Basner will be reporting directly to the Weinsteins, and will oversee all sales, marketing and distribution activities, including the expansion of the company’s home entertainment and TV endeavors. He will also collaborate closely with the unit’s acquisitions team.

For Miramax through September, Basner will finalize details on various projects and international sales.

“This is a huge coup for (the company),” Bob and Harvey Weinstein said in a joint statement. “Glen will give the firepower to build our international sales organization into a prominent supplier for the distribution of all of our movies worldwide. His talent relations will bring us the kind of films that enjoy large box office success both internationally and domestically.”

At Focus since its inception in 2002, Basner oversaw international distribution for films including “Hero,” “House of Flying Daggers,” “Talk to Her,” “Lost in Translation,” “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and “21 Grams.”

He previously worked as sales chief at Good Machine Intl., and he started his career in 1996 at Good Machine as director of production.
