New Line Cinema unspooled “The Upside of Anger” on Thursday, just four days after the Oscar swell had calmed, and the timing was intentional, according to New Line topper Rolf Mittweg.
Mittweg said the studio wanted, “after all the Oscar product, to offer meaningful entertainment for adult audiences.”
Mike Binder, who wrote, helmed and acted in the pic, admitted he was initially hesitant about New Line’s decision to release the film in March.
“I was going to go crazy and (say), ‘Oh no, you’ve got to keep it in December,’ but then I realized, you know, they might be right,” Binder said. “So far, it seems like they are right. It is fresher right now.”
Pic’s Erika Christensen had her own ideas about how to capitalize on the late winter release of “Upside.”
“We are going to have to pull some ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’ action,” she said.
