Spotlight section includes Kar-Wai, Loach, Dunne

NEW YORK — The Tribeca Film Festival unveiled its Spotlight section Friday, which will include pics by Asian auteur Wong Kar-Wai, “Closer” scribe Patrick Marber, Griffin Dunne, Abbas Kiarostami and Ken Loach, among others.

Fest toppers Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff — along with exec director Peter Scarlet — also announced a lineup of 15 pics comprising the fest’s Special Screenings this year.

Highlights in that section include a slew of pics that proved hot properties at Toronto, Sundance and Slamdance, including David LaChapelle’s “Rize” (Lions Gate), Michael Winterbottom’s “9 Songs” (Tartan), Marilyn Agrelo’s “Mad Hot Ballroom” (Paramount Classics), Sally Potter’s “Yes” (Sony Pictures Classics) and Gregg Araki’s “Mysterious Skin” (Tartan/TLA Releasing).

Spotlight section is led by Kar-Wai’s sci-fi feature “2046,” which screened last year at Cannes and was subsequently snapped up by Sony Pictures Classics.

Another pic showcased will be Par Classics’ “Asylum,” which was penned by “Closer” creator Marber, and directed by David Mackenzie. Pic stars Natasha Richardson and Ian McKellen in the story of a proper British wife who begins an affair with a patient in her husband’s psychiatric hospital in northern England.

SPC has another film in the spotlight section in Hans Petter Moland’s “Beautiful Country,” the story of a young Vietnamese-American’s odyssey to find his G.I. father Stateside, starring Nick Nolte and Tim Roth.

Also gaining a spotlight spot is a controversial pic that has made waves in France, Robert Guediguian’s “The Last Mitterand,” making its North American preem.

On tap as well are pics by Olivier Ducastel and Jacques Martineau (Strand’s “Cote d’Azur”); Griffin Dunne (Lions Gate’s “Fierce People”); documakers Douglas Keeve (“The Fund”) and Dori Berinstein (“Show Business”); Russian helmer Timur Bekmambetov (Fox Searchlight’s “Nightwatch”); Jonathan Hock (“Through the Fire”); and Kiarostami, Loach and Ermanno Olmi (“Tickets”).

Speaking out

In the special screenings category, highlights are skedded to include a docu helmed by Rosanna Arquette, “All We Are Saying,” which will make its Gotham bow.

Also skedded are pics by Costa-Gavras (“The Ax”), documaker Bob Eisenhardt (A&E’s “Bearing Witness”), Jaume Serra (Warner Bros.’ “House of Wax”), Charles Dance (Roadside Attractions’ “Ladies in Lavender”), Olmi (“Singing Behind the Scenes”), William Greaves (“Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take Two and a Half”) and a trio of pics by helmer Peter Greenaway (“The Tulse Luper Suitcases” trilogy).
