Lions Gate caves in for ‘Descent’

Studio scores U.S. rights to horror pic

LONDON — Lions Gate Entertainment has acquired North American rights to Neil Marshall horror film “The Descent.”

Pic is Marshall’s follow-up to his debut, “Dog Soldiers.” Story follows six young women on a caving adventure who are trapped underground and find themselves hunted by a race of humanoid predators.

Cast includes Shauna Macdonald, Nora-Jane Noone, Natalie Mendoza, Alex Reid and Saskia Mulder.

Pic was produced by Christian Colson for Celador Films, with Pathe distributing in the U.K. and handling worldwide sales.

“Based on just the script and promo reel, we knew we had to jump on this immediately,” said Peter Block, prexy of acquisitions and co-production for Lions Gate. “As he did with ‘Dog Soldiers,’ Neil knows how to deliver the scares.”

Pathe Pictures Intl. topper Alison Thompson said, “LGE did a fantastic job with Pathe’s ‘Girl With a Pearl Earring.’ We are delighted to continue the relationship.”
