Focus on Mexico’s Canana

Deal features rights to shingle's upcoming slate

Focus Features has inked a two-year deal with Mexico City-based Canana Films, the new shingle formed by thesps Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna with L.A.-based Mexican producer Pablo Cruz.

Deal will give Focus worldwide rights to Canana’s upcoming slate, which will include low-budget Spanish-language pics made in Mexico and higher budget English-language films.

Pact, which includes an option for a third year, continues the working relationship between Focus co-prexies David Linde and James Schamus and the Mexican thesps, which began with Alfonso Cuaron’s Oscar-nommed “Y tu mama tambien.” Linde and Schamus’ former company Good Machine Intl. held overseas rights to that pic. Garcia Bernal also starred in Focus’ Oscar-winning “The Motorcycle Diaries.” Focus Intl. handled Pedro Almodovar’s “Bad Education,” which Garcia Bernal toplined.

“There are so many filmmakers, screenwriters and actors in Mexico — both up-and-coming and established — that they can bring to our attention,” said Focus productions prexy John Lyons.

Luna recently starred in and co-produced Mexican-Brazilian co-production “Solo Dios sabe,” which Disney Latino label Miravista picked up for Latin America.

Garcia Bernal is starring in Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s “Babel,” currently shooting on location.
