Tobey ankles as Par shuffling continues

With Brad Grey’s overhaul of Paramount’s executive suite in full swing, motion picture group exec VP Bruce Tobey is ankling the studio.

Tobey’s departure comes after last week’s hiring of Revolution Studios partner Rob Moore for the newly created position of president of marketing, distribution and operations. Motion picture group vice chair and chief operating officer Rob Friedman departed last week.

Tobey told Daily Variety that he’s leaving at the end of August to pursue other opportunities.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to have had a hand in overseeing and operating all aspects of the studio and have been blessed with the opportunity to work with many truly wonderful people at Paramount and Viacom,” he said. “I could have not asked for a better opportunity.”

Tobey, at Par since 2001, had responsibility over a wide swath of the business side of the studio including corporate development, information systems, digital entertainment, business and legal affairs, the general counsel’s office, the studio group, human resources, diversity, industrial relations and government-community relations.

Friedman oversaw marketing, distribution, homevid, publicity and the classics division.

Moore will join Par on Aug. 1 with responsibility for marketing and distribution, administration, backlot operations and legal and business affairs.

“Bruce’s business acumen and knowledge of the studio has made him a great asset to the company in a variety of different forums,” Grey said. “I want to personally thank him for the dedication he has brought to his work.”

Tobey’s position at Par had been created under the regime of Viacom Entertainment Group prexy Jonathan Dolgen and studio chief Sherry Lansing in response to the growing complexity of its deals, partly due to the proliferation of split-rights pacts and international joint financing of movies. Since taking over for Lansing, Grey has asserted Paramount prefers to retain as much ownership of its films as possible.

Tobey previously worked at Broadband Sports, where he served as general counsel and a member of its senior management team. He was a partner for 15 years in the law firm of Troop, Steuber, Pasich, Reddick & Tobey, where he headed the firm’s transactional entertainment department.
