Tribeca new docu winner to be distribbed in 2006
Indie banner ThinkFilm has teamed with HBO/Cinemax Documentary Films to jointly acquire Jeff Zimbalist and Matt Mochary’s docu “Favela Rising.”
Pic, which world preemed at Tribeca this year and won the fest’s new docu honor, follows a drug trafficker from Rio de Janeiro who becomes a social activist and uses music and dance to combat the violence and oppression in his city’s slums.
Think has previously rolled out docus “Spellbound,” “The Aristocrats” and “Murderball.” Banner bought yet another nonfiction pic, “Aka Tommy Chong,” at the recent Toronto film fest.
“Favela” was being repped by Stephen Raphael and Ben Feldman.
Lumina Films has snapped up overseas rights.
Pic was produced by Mochary and Zimbalist, with Sidetrack Films, in association with Voy Pictures.
Distribs Think and HBO are planning a 2006 rollout.
