D’Works’ ‘Heartbreak’ beckons to Bateman

Studio pic a loose remake of Simon-penned laffer

“Arrested Development” star Jason Bateman is set to star in “The Heartbreak Kid,” the James Bobin-directed comedy that DreamWorks is putting into pre-production immediately.

“Saturday Night Live” star Amy Poehler is negotiating to play the female lead.

Scripted by Scot Armstrong and Leslie Dixon, “The Heartbreak Kid” is loosely inspired by the 1972 Neil Simon-scripted comedy that was directed by Elaine May. Bateman will play the young man who falls head over heels in love and gets married quickly, only to fall in love with another woman on the honeymoon.

Radar’s Ted Field and John Davis are producing. DreamWorks execs Marc Haimes and Ashley Woodard are overseeing the project. Pic will shoot in Mexico or the Caribbean.

Bateman has left a trail of broken hearts around Hollywood, as several studios offered him lead roles for his series hiatus. Bateman is experiencing a career resurgence since headlining the Emmy-winning series and essaying roles in “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story” and “Starsky & Hutch.”

Bateman hoped to do two films during his hiatus, but that didn’t prove feasible. Instead he will do one movie, even though it is not completely clear whether Fox will renew “Arrested Development,” despite the awards and critical accolades. A decision might not be made until May.
