1964: Ford ready for Vietnam

Glenn Ford hopes the Navy will assign him his annual two weeks duty in — Vietnam! Now a commander, Ford jumps into uniform when “The Rounders” winds; he follows the Navy tour of duty with a trek to Greece where Gina Lollobrigida awaits him for “Operation Aphrodite”– that’s the name of the film. (2005 note: Ford did indeed see active duty in Vietnam in a gunboat as well as in a chopper, which was shot down. He retired from the Naval Reserve as a full captain in 1976. Ford still resides in the same house in BevHills, and his son Peter says he’s readying a 90th birthday celebration for Glenn, April 30, 2006, at the Autry Museum.) … Hank Fonda, who co-stars with Ford in “Rounders,” fears his “Confessor” stint with Tony Curtis may require reshuffling for ’65 due to the latter’s “Great Race” start … The nekkid scenes with Ford, Fonda and lassies Sue Ane Langdon and Hope Holliday in a mountain lake became more realistic than planned when the costume deception fell away in the water — however, lest anyone worry about good taste (etc., etc.) director Burt Kennedy assures us the girls have nothing to fear — they were lensed thru sufficient gauze. However, there’s a priceless still pic at Metro showing the foursome — awesome…
