1956: The new Newman

From the Archerd Archives

December 6, 1956

PAUL NEWMAN’S PERSONAL and professional future is very “indefinite.” He won’t discuss the almost-certain divorce. And doesn’t want to do WB’s latest offer, “Bombers B-52.” But contrary to the way it looks, Newman says, “I want to go to work” … Karl Malden, here to do “Bombers,” stands strongly with Elia Kazan’s decision not to cut “Baby Doll” to satisfy the Legion of Decency. “We’ve got to do something,” says Malden, “to get people away from TV. This is a very adult motion picture” … CBS-TV is so crowded these days, Ginger Rogers, guesting with Jack Benny, was told to report for rehearsals at the Beverly Chateau Caterers. To do her chef d’oeuvre or hors d’oeuvres? … Las Vegas is happy to see Abbott and Costello up there — they like the long, green tables … Paramount sent James Cagney a copy of “The Captain’s Table.” Cagney likes it, but said, “It’s so great, I see Cary Grant in it” … Guest list at the L.B. Mayers’ eighth wedding anni party included Joe Vogel, Ben Thau, Mervyn LeRoy, George Sidney. Jack Cummings. But Joe Pasternak couldn’t make it — he’s at Mt. Sinai Hospital undergoing tests. “Next time I want to cast pretty nurses in a picture,” says Joe, “I’m gonna come here.”
