1950: Wayne takes a breather

June 1, 1950: John Wayne, suffering from exhaustion after his p.a. trip for “The Searchers,” and his daughter’s wedding, is recuping at home. Wayne’s film plans for Batjac will be launched with “Timbuktu” in Africa this winter… Joan Crawford’s daughter Cristina has been accepted by Carnegie Tech, where she’ll major in drama. La Crawford returned to Hollywood to fit her Jean Louis gowns for “Esther Costello,” departs for England July 9 and will not be back in the U.S. until November. She still plans to sell her Brentwood home…. Burt Lancaster’s son broke up the family during the trapeze clinch between Lollo and Lancaster: “Gee daddy,” the sprig shouted, “you’re kissing her upside-down.”…The Lee Marvins expect the stork June 15 as he leaves for the “Raintree County” location down south… According to Irving Brecher, “When anyone listens to how beautifully Jessel delivers a eulogy, he wishes he were dead.”
