Box office bump for ‘Batman’

Pic overperforms on Father's Day; cume rises to $73 mil

In the final tally, “Batman Begins” opened stronger than Warner Bros. had estimated, due to a strong turnout on Father’s Day.

According to the actual figures released Monday, pic brought in $48.7 million over the weekend — nearly $2 million more than the Sunday estimate — raising its five-day total to $72.9 million.

“We anticipated a strong Sunday for Father’s Day,” said Warners distrib chief Dan Fellman. “But it broke all historical records on how pictures perform on the holiday.”

The $15.7 million Sunday total was higher than both the opening Wednesday and Friday. Pic, which skewed male in its opening, was the only title in the top 10 to overperform on Father’s Day, Fellman noted.
