‘Mountain’ moves S.F. Crix Circle

Org joining 'Brokeback' lovefest

Adding to a critics-society consensus, the San Francisco Film Critics Circle today handed major nods to “Brokeback Mountain” — echoing kudos already announced by the L.A., New York and Boston bodies.

The org’s sole multiple winner this year, “Brokeback” copped an actor citation for Heath Ledger’s taciturn cowpoke and the director nod for Ang Lee. The screenplay honor, however, went to George Clooney and Grant Heslov for “Good Night, and Good Luck,” which made partial use of original telecast transcripts.

Reese Witherspoon claimed the actress nod for in “Walk the Line” –all five top nods among English-language narrative pics went to subjects set in the 1950s and ’60s.

Supporting actress went to Amy Adams for her breakthrough turn in the dysfunctional Southern family drama “Junebug”; supporting actor went to Kevin Costner for his atypical role as an alcoholic ex-baseball star in dysfunctional Northern family drama “The Upside of Anger.”

In line with the L.A. critics, Michael Haneke’s tricky invasion-of-privacy thriller “Cache” (“Hidden”) won for foreign-language feature, and “Grizzly Man,” Werner Herzog’s portrait of late nature lover Timothy Treadwell, was named top documentary.

The Marlon Riggs Award, given for “courage and innovation” demonstrated by a member of the Bay Area film community, was awarded this year to Jenni Olson. Her experimental feature “The Joy of Life” was lauded for “expanding the parameters of narrative, documentary and personal cinema while capturing the unique rhythms of life in San Francisco.”
