Clint Eastwood and Hilary Swank ascended into elite company Sunday with Oscar wins for “Million Dollar Baby.”

Eastwood became the 18th director to win two or more helming Academy Awards while Swank became the 12th actress to win at least two best actress Oscars.

John Ford holds the directing record with four for “The Informer,” “Grapes of Wrath,” “How Green Was My Valley” and “The Quiet Man.” Katharine Hepburn is the only actress with four Oscars, winning for “Morning Glory,” “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” “The Lion in Winter” and “On Golden Pond.” Ingrid Bergman won three Oscars for “Gaslight,” “Anastasia” and “Murder on the Orient Express.”

Frank Capra won three Oscars for directing “It Happened One Night,” “Mr. Deeds Goes to Town” and “You Can’t Take It With You.” William Wyler also won three for “”Mrs. Miniver,” “The Best Years of Our Lives” and “Ben-Hur.”

Along with Eastwood, 14 directors have won two of the helming statuettes: Frank Borzage (“Seventh Heaven,” “Bad Girl”), Milos Forman (“One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” “Amadeus”), Elia Kazan (“Gentleman’s Agreement,” “On the Waterfront”), David Lean (“The Bridge on the River Kwai,” “Lawrence of Arabia”), Frank Lloyd (“The Divine Lady,” “Cavalcade”), Joseph Mankiewicz (“A Letter to Three Wives,” “All About Eve”).

In addition, there were Leo McCarey (“The Awful Truth,” “Going My Way”), Lewis Milestone (“Two Arabian Knights,” “All Quiet on the Western Front”), Steven Spielberg (“Schindler’s List,” “Saving Private Ryan”), George Stevens (“A Place in the Sun,” “Giant”), Oliver Stone (“Platoon,” “Born on the Fourth of July”), Billy Wilder (“The Lost Weekend,” “The Apartment”), Robert Wise (“West Side Story,” “The Sound of Music”) and Fred Zinnemann (“From Here to Eternity,” “A Man for All Seasons”).

Swank joins nine other actresses who’ve won two best actress Oscars – Bette Davis (“Dangerous,” “Jezebel”), Olivia de Havilland (“To Each His Own,” “The Heiress”), Sally Field (“Norma Rae,” “Places in the Heart”), Jane Fonda (“Klute,” “Coming Home”), Jodie Foster (“The Accused,” “The Silence of the Lambs”), Glenda Jackson (“Women in Love,” “A Touch of Class”), Vivian Leigh (“Gone With the Wind,” “A Streetcar Named Desire”) Luise Rainer (The Great Ziegfeld,” “The Good Earth”) and Elizabeth Taylor (“Butterfield 8,” “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”).

Martin Scorsese joins Alfred Hitchcock and Robert Altman as directors with five noms without winning an Oscar. Federico Fellini, Stanley Kubrick and Sidney Lumet have all been nommed four times without winning.
