India’s sole Oscar nominee, “Little Terrorist,” will get a theatrical release — the first for a short in the country.
Helmer Ashvin Kumar’s “Little Terrorist” tracks 10-year-old Jamal, a Pakistani Muslim, who chases his cricket ball into Indian territory and is branded a terrorist by security forces. He is saved by a high-caste Hindu teacher who played cricket as a youth in the same spot as Jamal before India was partitioned to form Pakistan in 1947.
It has won awards for film in Montreal, Manhattan, at the Flanders Film Festival and at the Tehran Short Film Festival.
It will be released on 15 prints in Mumbai, Jaipur, Delhi and Bangalore.
