BAFTA has room for a rising star

Orange Rising Star Award in honor of Selway

The British Academy of Film & TV Arts and its primary sponsor, Orange, have created a prize for rising film star in honor of casting director Mary Selway.

The Orange Rising Star Award will replace the Orange film of the year prize, which the public voted on from a shortlist of the year’s 10 top-grossing movies.

For the new kudos, a jury of 11 leading industry figures, including Cate Blanchett this year, will select the five nominees. Winner will be decided by a public vote and announced at the British Academy Film Awards Feb. 19.

Award is open to actors between 18 and 32 from any country. The only restriction is that two of the five nominees must be British.

Thesps will be considered for their body of work rather than an individual part, but they also must have performed a breakthrough role in a movie released in the current year.

According to the official guidelines, award will recognize “a young actor or actress of any nationality who has demonstrated exceptional talent and ambition and has begun to capture the imagination of the British public.”

BAFTA has been looking for an appropriate way to honor Selway since she died in 2004. She was instrumental in launching the careers of many young actors; in 2000, BAFTA gave her its Michael Balcon prize for contribution to British cinema.

Orange also was looking to revamp its film award, which had become somewhat predictable (it went to “The Lord of the Rings” pics three years in a row) and was too easily confused with BAFTA’s film prize.
