The strongest scene in "Cronicas" occurs about 10 minutes in, with the savage lynching and near-immolation of a man who accidentally causes a child's death. Viewers hungry for more should be satisfied with the DVD, which contains not only a different version of the scene, but also an alternate ending in which John Leguizamo's TV reporter is attacked by an angry mob.

The strongest scene in “Cronicas” occurs about 10 minutes in, with the savage lynching and near-immolation of a man who accidentally causes a child’s death. Viewers hungry for more should be satisfied with the DVD, which contains not only a different version of the scene (this time set to music), but also an alternate ending in which John Leguizamo’s intrepid TV reporter is attacked by an angry mob.

It’s a wonder these luridly watchable extras aren’t being advertised on the cover (“Now with three times more lynching!”), though the disc has plenty more to recommend itself. Two standard bonuses, a behind-the-scenes photo gallery and a making-of featurette, here convey the sweaty, gritty texture of the pic’s Ecuadorian locations, among them a serial killer’s burial ground. (And of course, you also get to see how they shot the lynching scene.)

Rounding out the package are a straightforward commentary track by helmer Sebastian Cordero and, on a more upbeat note, a recording session with Mexican group Los Shajatos, who were guest musicians on the project.
