Review: ‘Bill and Ted’s Most Excellent Collection’

An underdog movie if there ever was one -- even a video release was in doubt -- "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure" defied expectations to spawn a sequel and a quintissential slacker dude persona star Keanu Reeves has yet to completely shake.

An underdog movie if there ever was one — even a video release was in doubt — “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure” defied expectations to spawn a sequel and a quintissential slacker dude persona star Keanu Reeves has yet to completely shake.

Reeves did not weigh in on this three-disc box set, but we learn from co-star Alex Winter the two still occasionally talk about a “Bill & Ted” reunion one day. The “non-bogus” bonus disc is suffused with the same sweet cheer as the original 1989 buddy pic: There’s “The Most Triumphant Making-of” docu, an air guitar tutorial and a guide to the linguistic stylings of the time traveling high schoolers. Most excellent extra: reminiscences by scribes Ed Solomon and Chris Matheson, who developed the characters in an improv sketch, and admit they are, in a way, Bill and Ted themselves.
